Automatic gates provide many benefits, including additional security and safety for residences and businesses. People rely on the gates in many ways. But what happens if the electric gate doesn’t work?
Troubleshooting Electric Gate Problems
As with all electronic and mechanized parts, gate parts can fail for many reasons, the below are examples of a gate failing:
Unusual Noise
Electric gates make noise when they’re operating; however, if something goes wrong, the gate may make unusual, loud noises you’ve not heard before.
The problem could be that something’s caught in the mechanism, especially if there are plants nearby. Another cause for the unusual noise could be something that’s not apparent. In that case, it’s best to hire a professional to come and assess the problem.
Gate Not Running
When the gate doesn’t run, this could be due to a power outage. Check to see if the gate has power. If so, the remote control may need new batteries. However, if that doesn’t seem to be the problem, look to see if the gate slides or swings freely when placed into manual by releasing the mechanism. Is there anything preventing the gate from moving?
If you can’t figure out the problem, it’s best to call a professional. They have the knowledge and experience to deal with electrical gate issues.
Obstructed Sensors
Another common problem with electric gates is that insects or other pests may be covering or living inside the gate safety devices. This may cause the sensors to be blocked and keep the gate from opening.
Or it’s possible that mold or moss may have grown over the sensors.
These problems are easy to check with a visual inspection. If you find anything on the sensors, wipe it off with a soft cloth, which should fix the issue.
Stuck in Manual Mode
Changing over to manual mode may be necessary at times, such as during a power outage. However, it’s possible for an electric gate to be stuck in manual mode.
When this happens, it’s best to call a professional.
Gate Gets Stuck and/or Jerky
When a gate doesn’t open smoothly, it can mean some of the components have worn out. This could include the rollers, hinges, rails, or other parts of the system. In that case, it’s best to call a professional to fix the problem, especially if you can’t find what’s wrong.
Proper Maintenance is Key
While electric gates and their components do break from time to time, properly maintaining your gate can make it last longer. The better care you take of the gate, the better it will work.
Proper maintenance involves keeping the gate and all parts clean. Gates can be rinsed off every few months and when they’re particularly dirty, such as after a large storm.
The electrical components also need to be cleaned. It starts by ensuring that your gate components are free of insects or other pests. Wings and other pieces of insects can become lodged in the gate’s electrical components, as well as spider webs and slugs.
In addition, it’s a good idea to check the electric gate opening to ensure it’s running correctly.
Even with proper maintenance, gate parts will eventually fail. And for this reason, we carry a wide range of gate replacement parts.
